[net.auto] 1984 Honda Accord owners: PLEASE READ!!!

trb@drutx.UUCP (10/10/84)

Has anyone out there who owns a 1984 Honda Accord (any model)
had any problem with a slight shimmy at any speed?

After my 1983 Honda Accord was ran into and totalled, I bought
a 1984 Honda Accord 4-dr. It had stock wheels and Bridgestone
tires, and had a shimmy problem especially noticeable at 60-65
mph. I had the wheels balanced 3 times to no avail.

The service manager then suggested the tires were out-of-round.
We have tried several sets of tires, and there are new Michelins
on the car now, plus new wheels. The car still has a shimmy
problem.

Does anyone know what might cause this, and are there any Honda
owners out there who have had similar problems? I would
appreciate ANY help! Thanks...

Is this the Japanese or the American version ? Just curious ...

I have 1984 Honda Accord 4-door sedan, manual 5 speed
with exactly similar shimmying problems as mentioned in the
referenced article.
Two days after I bought it, the shimmying was so bad that
I took it for servicing. The dealer service people rotated
the tires.
It was still shimmying so that I took it back a second time.
They rotated the wheels again, guaranteed that the problem
was fixed, but it has gotten worse. Now it is difficult to
drive the car even at 55mph.
The service folks have asked to me to bring it in again,
but I suspect the problem wont be solved for a long time.
I am now concerned that there is something seriously wrong
because even at idling speeds, my gear shaft vibrates with small
amplitude vibrations which are unpleasent
and something may be wrong with the transmission.
This may be translating to the shimmy at higher speeds.
Any solutions/comments will be appreciated.

I have that same problem (shimmy, 60-65) on my 81 Ford Escort. No one has yeet
been able to fix it (new tires, multiple balance and alignment, etc.). Return
your car before its too late.
