[net.auto] 1985 Golf Information

hal@aesat.UUCP (Hal Patnaik) (09/25/84)

Well, here are some prices I managed to scrounge up for the new
Golf GTI's:

BASE :	$ 11,345	(last year was $10,295)
FRT & PDI	:	$ 340
CRUISE :	$ 240
AIR :	$ 1,095	(includes air tax)
POWER STEERING	:	$ 345
STEREO/CASSETTE	:	$ 350

The normal golfs will be substantially cheaper and start off at
$8585. This would be a good deal for someone who had been
thinking of an 84 GTI as it has the same engine, and is a much
better designed car (and will be only a few ticks slower than
an 84 GTI (for $8585, you can afford to make a lot of changes,
like Recaros, bigger wheels and tires, etc.)

AVAILABILITY:
This is a very sore issue. I have had several different opinions
from several different dealers. They range from the end of
December to May of 1985 for the GTI. The normal Golf will be
available by the end of October.

The GTI will have a 100hp engine and all other Golf's and Jetta's
will have last years 1.8L 90hp GTI engine.

VW is also going to introduce a Jetta Carat in replacement of the
Jetta GLI, which will be loaded to the gills with luxury items
like power windows, air conditioning, stereo, the new GTI engine,
etc.

All the dealers I talked to were not flexible as far as
concerns price, you pay list or you don't get a car. Not only
that, but they are saying that if you order a car now, you will
be better off. For 2 reasons: you will be getting one of the
first cars off the lot, and by the time the third production
starts (GTI's come off on the October productions, which was the
second) VW will add a premium of about $500 to the cars.... This
is beginning to sound like dealing with Honda or Nissan.. (and I
thought only Japanese cars had import restrictions :-), not
to mention the fact that all these cars are made in Good 'ol US
of A. But the cars are really only ASSEMBLED in the states, with
a majority of the parts being shipped from Alemania (thats
Spanish for Germany)

Anyway, the GTI is worth the wait, but if you get a car with air,
a sunroof, frt. etc. by the time you are finished, you have the
price of an '84 Honda Prelude which you can get in only 3
months... Something to consider... (ie, wouldn't you rather be
seen in a Prelude than a GTI?????)

Happy driving!!!!

Sorry, but list most certainly was not 10,295. That may have been the price
after added dealer extortion, but base started just below 8k and ended up over,
I think. I was offered one by a salesman for 8k about a month and a half ago
when I was looking. The price on the car was over 10k, but I told him I
wouldn't go over 8k before he started looking at their prices--so he read off
the list prices.

And who in their right mind would put power steering on a GTI?????

The prices quoted by Hal Patniak in his article on 1985
Golf prices seemed rather high to me, but then I noticed
that Hal lives in The Great White North (Canada). The
prices quoted were in $CDN. This makes you both correct.
$CDN 10,295 ~= $US 8,010.30. The base in Canada may also
be different than that in the States even with the
currency exchange figured in.
