[net.auto] Quartz-Halogen 4-headlight sets: Re

robert@hpfcnml.UUCP (robert) (10/09/84)

Some friends of mine and I bought halogen lights out of an ad in Auto Week.

I bought Cebie (sp?) and my friend had (Z Beam) lights.
There is no question in my that the lenses on his lights were better
than mine. His head lights had a great sharp cutoff and nice lighting
to the side of the road.

Because the lights we had are not sealed we could order bulbs that are
brighter than normal. 40/100W bulbs I think. This gives me great
visability on long dark roads and regular low beams so I don't bother
other drivers.

My halogen lights haven't seemed to give others a problem on the road.
At least I don't get people flashing their lights at me. The problem
with halogen or any headlights is when people don't aim them.

In short: get Z-beam lens and order bulbs with a brighter high beam.
And please don't forget to aim them.

With regard to halogan headlights. I have a set of hella lights with 60/100
bulbs and I prefer the beam pattern of the Hella's. Instead of having the
low beam project uniformly as normal lights do thus:

	  ..... .....
	......... .........
       ........... ...........
       ........... ...........
	......... .........
	  ..... ......

They project a beam the looks like this (low beam)

	         *		           *		The dispersion pattern
            ******* ******* is significantly wider
*************** *************** so more of the sides of
************* ************* the road are lit up.
	******** ********* (brighter too)

Also, you can see that the pattern is somewhat truncated. This allows you
to have the beams aimed higher without having it in the oncomming driver's
eyes.

I believe that the lights robert were referring to (cbi's?) have a truncation
pattern like a ruler, instead. Also those lights were 90/100 instead of 60/100
which means that they really were brighter. These bulbs could also be used in
the HELLA's but cost $20 each, instead of $10.

In any case, ANY lamp that is not sealed beam is likely to be better.
