[comp.windows.ms] Old apps and 3.0: a fix

abh0@GTE.COM (Andrew Hudson) (05/25/90)

I have heard of some problems and solutions with some
deos from 2.*. The first problem involves the infamous
'fish' demo. Apparently the fish icons look are messed. This
is because 3.0 uses 4 bits of color and 2.* used only
3 bits of color. Apparently you can you the conversions
supplied in some of the paint programs to convert from
8 colors to 16.

Another problem has to do with memory access. I don't
know the exact symptoms but removing himem.sys from you .ini
file eliminates the conflict. This shouldn't be construed
as a permanent fix, removing himem.sys slooooows your
memory managment. Basically it lets some of the older
apps run.

Found this out at the Boston Computer Society MSWindows/
Presentation Manager subgroup. Pretty neat.
