[net.auto] Mobil One, graphite-based oils

kitten@pertec.UUCP (karen hettinger) (10/05/84)

I don't claim to be any kind of expert on oils, but I know of someone
who had bad experience with Mobil One. A guy I knew who worked at
Sacramento Racing Equipment (the ORIGINAL Super Shop) said he had used
it in three or four different cars. These cars were NOT used for racing
of any kind, he was mostly a tinkerer. He found upon inspection after
using the oil for various lengths of time in the different cars that
ALL suffered extreme wear damage, caused by the graphite in the oil.
(P.S. If I recall correctly, all the cars saw at least one oil change.)

As I understand it from memeory of the Mobil One commercials, the graphite
flakes are supposed to form a layer between metal parts...say the lower
piston and the cylinder wall. What had happened instead is that the graphite
*caused* friction between the metal parts, and since I understand graphite
to be a somewhat hard compound, it caused scratches in the metal. All I can
figure is that 1) the graphite flakes did not lay flat between the metal
parts as intended, or 2) the graphite was not in a flake form, and acted as
would metal fragments suspended in the oil.

Does anyone more knowledgable have any comments?

I believe you have Mobil One and Arco Graphite Oil
mixed up. The Arco oil did as you described (i.e.
caused deposits of graphite in the engine that caused
wear and clogging of oil passages). I think it
has been taken off the market. Mobil One is a
synthetic oil and does not contain graphite.

This comment about Arco being off the market - actually, Arco stopped selling
it through non-Arco outlets, but I kept buying it at my neighborhood Arco
station until May, when I sold my 510 with 150,000 mi, running OK. As for
clogging oil passages, it certainly didn't clog the passages where the oil
escaped from [:-) but true].

It seems I have been mistaken about Mobil One...guess my memory is
fading in my old age...many of you have corrected me by saying
that Mobil One is not graphite-based. Perhaps it *was* Arco Graphite...
Some of you asked if the cars were new. No, I don't think so, but
I *do* remember all were rebuilt before staring use of the graphite/
synthetic oil. All had pretty much the same damage. All had in common
the oil. After he no longer used synthetic oils, he no longer had
a problem in his other cars (that he tinkered with).
