[comp.windows.ms] : Win 3.0 - Just how well does it work on old boxes?

gt0159a@prism.gatech.EDU (LEVINSON,MARC LOUIS) (05/27/90)

Congrats to Microsoft for releasing a product on schedule.

I have a few questions for experienced users of Win 30 (OK, Beta testers).

1. How well does it work on an OLD AT (8MHz)?
    a. Configured with 2MB RAM (EMS or EXT)

2. Does Win 3.0 take advantage of a math coprocessor for basic GUI functions?

3. How much disk space does the basic package require?

4. Now that Microsoft has gone to a better installation utility, have they
started using better quality distribution diskettes? (I own quite a lot
of MS apps and have had to exchange many unreadable diskettes)

5. Just how unfriendly is Win3.0 to old Windows apps on a 286? I have WinWord
and would like to take advantage of the speed and memery usage, but need to
run other apps as well. Does the protected mode operation still run standard
   (non EMS) Windows apps correctly?

6. My upgrade notice gave a list of software written for Win3.0. In it, they
showed Excel 2.11c. I own 2.11 (according to About...). Is there a
   difference?

7. What is going to happen with all of the wonderful PD and Shareware utils
written for old Windows, will they work, or will somebody be nice enough
to post upgrade notices on the net for those that won't?

On the same subject, any thoughts on creating a distinction for old and
new Windows(3.0) apps on the directories in FTP sites and other listings?

8. Does Windows 3.0 support com3 and com4?

Thanks for answering my questions via mail, rather than cluttering the
net with multiple responses to the same question. I'll post a summary.

Perhaps with the influx of questions about Win3.0, we should create and post
a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions and answers) file as is done in
comp.sys.ibm.pc.
