Last week I posted my problem with Windows Write on an AST Premium
286. Several readers informed me that I needed to upgrade the BIOS
and/or keyboard controller. I just received the part from AST (they
told me it would take 2 weeks - it took two working days!) I will
soon install it and I'll report whether it constitutes a fix.
I have another 286 which has a different problem under Windows 3. This
is a Samsung 10 Mhz machine. The problem is this: When I exit Windows
and try to access the a: drive from DOS, the machine gives me a "parity I/O
error" and locks up. This also happens if I shell to DOS from Windows.
I can access drive a: from the Windows File Manager without problems - I
can move, delete, list, etc. Further, if I restart the machine and access
the a: drive before invoking Windows, there's no problem. Once I've used
Windows, however, the problem appears. Any hypotheses?
