[comp.windows.ms] A Very Basic Question About Windows 3.0 <Help!>

shedevil@portia.Stanford.EDU (Anne Prisk) (06/14/90)

I'm about to purchase Windows 3.0...but first I want to make sure
it will even work with the programs I currently want to run.

Primarily I am concerned about being able to run WordPerfect 5.0 and
ProComm Plus together. Currently I can run WordPerfect through ProComm
while I am logged on <now for instance> via the alt-a option.

Will I be able to run the two in seperate windows? Will I even still
be able to do it the way I currently am? Or will I not be able to do
it at all?

Thanks.

Annie

Word Perfect 5.1 runs wonderfully in a window. The only trick is to
set the graphics display to CGA. This will allow you to use Preview
mode while running in a Window. The Preview will now be Black and White
instead of color but you don't lose any resolution.
(This of course is only good on a 386 since you can't run DOS apps
in a Window on a 286 or 8088)

I highly recommend switching to a Windows based Communication Package
(such as Crosstalk for Windows). The ability to provide downloads in
background, scale the font size, write scripts using DDE, etc make it
one of the greatest uses of the Windows environment.

On a 386, yes!

On a 386, I'm not sure why you would want to, but provided you have
enough memory the answer is Yes. You get about 530k for a DOS App
running in a Window.
