Does anyone have any information regarding the back seat carpet being completly soaked after a rainstorm? I drove in the storm but the windows were not left down and only the carpet in back seat was affected. It almost seems like the water came in from the underside of the car. I remember reading something about this a few years back but have forgotten it. I have an 1082 Olds Toronado. Any insight will be appreciated. D H Heath ihuxq!heater

Amazing! I was about to post a request for info on this very subject, and this morning I read the thing about checking a sunroof for leaks. I recently purchased a '77 VW Rabid, and what a junkbox it is, too! No sunroof, but it does have a factory-installed luggage rack. Well, the rainy season has returned to Washington state (after a gorgeous summer, I might add!), and I knew I had not driven the car enough for that much water to have gotten in from the underside. My probable solution in this case will be to just gop some RTV around each of the stanchions on the rack, and I have a feeling that that will take care of it. Meanwhile, I think I'll probably install a drain-plug from my local marina. |-) As an aside, I called the *dingbat* I got the car from and asked where the switch for the bilge pump was located. She replied, "I really don't know -- you'll have to look in the owner's manual". This is a great newsgroup. Thanks to all of you for keeping it relatively sane. -- Gary Benson ms232e -*- John Fluke Mfg Co -*- Box C9090 -*- Everett WA 98206 USA {microsoft,allegra,ssc-vax,sun,sb1}{decvax,ihnp4,tektronix!uw-beaver}!fluke!inc +- Paid for by the Tirebiter for Political Solutions Committee, Sector R -+ -- Gary Benson ms232e -*- John Fluke Mfg Co -*- Box C9090 -*- Everett WA 98206 USA {microsoft,allegra,ssc-vax,sun,sb1}{decvax,ihnp4,tektronix!uw-beaver}!fluke!inc +- Paid for by the Tirebiter for Political Solutions Committee, Sector R -+

Hi! I saw your note in net.auto about water soaking your back carpet in a '82 Toronado. There are two possibilities that leap to mind. First, if you have a sunroof, chances are 3 out of 4 that it is leaking into the door posts behind the doors, and down into the rear area of the passenger compartment. I had a friend here who had that problem with his Eldorado. An unlikely source would be rear window seal problems, but your rear deck should be moist if this is true. A leak from the underside is quite unlikely. To test the sunroof theory, wait till the carpet is dry, and apply LOTS of water to the seal areas of the sunroof. Make sure you control the runoff so that you know where ALL the water is going. Hope this helps! Jim Donnelly hp-pcd!jimd
