[comp.windows.ms] EGA-res programs in V86 windows?

jshekhel@feds19.prime.com (Jerry Shekhel ) (07/03/90)

Hello. Does anyone know whether it's possible to run an EGA-resolution
program in a window under Windows 3.0/386? I can run CGA programs fine,
but whenever I try to run an EGA program in a window, I get the message,

"You cannot run this program while
		 other high-resoluation applications
		 are running fullscreen..."

(or something very similar)

I also noticed that this happens under Windows' standard VGA driver.

By the way, I'm using a 386SX w/4MB RAM, ATI VGA Wonder/512K, and ATI's
800x600x16 Windows 3.0 driver. 800x600 is NICE! Can't wait for the
256-color driver.

If anyone can help, please respond via follow-up. I've been having
difficulties with e-mail. Thanks in advance.

It is not possible to run a standard dos application which does graphics in
a window, as far as I know. The only way I know of to run a dos graphics
application under windows is to run it full screen. (If someone else knows
how to do this, I'd also be interested.)

It IS possible to run standard dos applications which do graphics in
a window, if these applications use the CGA resolution.

I stand corrected. The situation where I recently got the message must have
been EGA or VGA resolution. Thanks for the clarification.
