[comp.windows.ms] [Repost] Re: marking 2.x apps OK for win3.0

bxw@ccadfa.adfa.oz.au (Brad Willcott) (06/07/90)

For those of you who missed it the first time, here is a repost of Barry Press'
program 'nonag'. I have NOT tested it as I haven't received an upgrade to
Win 3.0 as yet. Perhaps anyone who has used it might want to post any comments
or evaluations. Anyway, here it is :

The enclosed .zip file contains both nonag.c and nonag.com, which (more or less)
implement Jeff's technique. To use nonag.com, you enter the command

	nonag foo.exe

The file is modified in place, so be sure to have a backup copy. As you will
see from the source code, it tries to check fairly extensively that the
file is in fact a Windows new format executable, etc.

Note: This is (at best) hastily developed gunge code, and certainly not
a model of what good coding practice calls for. Furthermore, it has been
tested on a grand total of 4 applications. Your mileage may indeed vary.
That's why the source code is there. And, of course, remember that all it
does is eliminate the annoying messages -- it does not find or solve any
incompatibilities. Don't apply it to programs you are not confident about.

I've used nonag successfully on the following .exe files:

Aporia.exe
Aplib.exe (Aporia and aplib form a desktop enhancement package Aporia
is really incompatible with win3: it has a function
where it tells you about your system, memory etc, which crashest win3.
It also crashes win3 if you exit win3 without closing aporia. Apart
from that, it seems to work fine.

WinQVT 4.15: works just fine under win 3.0 I've been noticing some
problems with recreating the window after it's been iconised, but I
don't know if the problem is specific to Winqvt+Win3.0 or not. What
happens is that when I double-click on the icon, sometimes the window
is empty, looks like an empty frame, and gets filled with whatever is
"lying beneath" it. The program still works fine, and once I start
doing things in the window, it recreates itself.

I *think* I've run nonag on Unicom 1.4 and GCP42S, but I can't
guarantee that. I think that in general I had problems running any
pd/shareware software written for win 2.xx (under win3.0) that had any
kind of memory utilities (show memory etc).

For those of you who missed it the first time, here is a repost
of Barry Press' program 'nonag'. I have NOT tested it as I
haven't received an upgrade to Win 3.0 as yet. Perhaps anyone
who has used it might want to post any comments or evaluations.
	Anyway, here it is :

Although this DOS program works, an even spiffier way is to use the
"MARK30.ZIP" program (shareware or freeware I think). It's a Windows 3.0
application for set/resetting the memory-handling-clean flag (which nonag
sets) AND for setting/resetting the proportional-system-fonts flag which
allows the nice proportional fonts to show up in the application as
well! This program is also very nice and easy to use (as is Windows
programs... mostly). I got it from a local Windows-oriented BBS, but I
understand it is available in the appropriate Compuserve Forum (which I
don't "connect" to).

I wish more of those Compuserve programs would who up here or in the
binaries newsgroup!

BTW - if you want to modify the nonag program, I think it's the 0x02 bit
that sets the proportional font "active", so put in a 0x06 rather than 0x04
at the specified location.

Subject: Marking Windows 2.X applications for use under Windows 3.0

Hello Mike @ Tektronics,

Mike - you made reference to a program called MARK30.ZIP. Would you be willing
to post the program and/or the phone number for the BBS where you found it?

Thanks.

Here is all the anonymous ftp sites I know of that carry windows
stuff. If there are any more, I would be grateful if someone could
send me e-mail. I will update the list and repost.

clvax1.cl.msu.edu 35.8.2.1 MS Windows
cica.cica.indiana.edu 129.79.20.22 MS Windows <-- mark 30
Vassa 128.214.12.3 MS Windows

other sites (w/o internet addresses...) are

wsmr-simtel20.army.mil (which is also known as simtel20. Simtel now
has a new msdos directory called windows3 which has only windows3
specific stuff. I *think* Mark 30 is there.

wuarchive.wustl.edu is among other things a mirror for simtel

terminator.cc.umich.edu
grape.ecs.clarkson.edu

Hope this helps.

The last one is really chyde.uwasa.fi (uwasa.fi for friends 8-)). You
meant Vaasa, which is our home town. But if you say 'town' to ftp I
think ftp would not know that...
