I received the following from someone at Microsoft re: my original question about returning to a fixed system font in Win3 (for use in WfW draft mode). To their credit, the reply was thoughtful and prompt. I thought I'd share it with the net. Text follows: From: microsoft!dougt@beaver.cs.washington.edu Hi, My name is Doug Timpe from the Word for Windows development team at Microsoft. Your message was forwarded to me by one of my friends. When Winword 1.0 was built, the world only had Windows 2.xx. Therefore, when we made a request to Windows for 'the System font' we got back Courier. Then Windows 3.0 shipped, and 'the System font' became Helvetica. There is no way to change Winword's request for the system font. What I have suggested for future versions of Winword is to provide a Draft style. So at this time there is no way to use Windows 3.0 and get the System font for draft view, because Windows 3.0 changes the rules of the game. The original idea of draft view was to suspend usage of memory for fonts. We could toss the memory used by the fonts and give it back to you for your document. This was the original purpose of draft; not to give you a mono- spaced font. But many people such as yourself actually *like* the mono- spaced font, which was an unanticipated reaction by us. So we're listening, and we'll make the product fit your needs. Thanks, Doug Timpe Winword Development Team Please advise me first if this message is going to be posted to the net. Thanks!
