Thanks to all who responded. Everyone told me that the Japanese steering wheel is on the right; I knew this (having been to Japan once before for an overnight stop on the way to China, and also from general knowledge). However, this is not illegal in the U.S.--Post Office vehicles often have and I have driven them there several times. They're not that hard to get used to.
