[comp.windows.ms] himem, SVGA problems

blue@discus.technion.ac.il (Baruch Cochavy) (07/25/90)

I have encountered some problems using Windows 3.0, which maybe
someone can help sort out. My configuration is:

        386/SX M.B. (Uses Intel chipset)
        4 Mb RAM
        65Meg HD + DMDRVR.BIN (partitioned to C: (1M), D: (31M) and D: (31M) )
        ST22R Integrated RLL HDC
EVA-III SVGA CARD (ET3000 Tseng chip, Tseng GENERIC BIOS)
        MSDOS 3.3
        himem.sys installed at boot.

There are two problems - but I don't think there is any connection between
those two :

1. I tried using 4DOS as my power-up shell. I added some checking to the
command.com, where I compare two copies of it, one located on C:\
and the other on D: . Whenever himem.sys is installed, the files
mismatch. However, when I remove it, the two copies are the same.
I have copied the C: copy from the file on D: , so there is no chance
of the C: copy being corrupted in some way. Also, to the best of SCAN's
   knowledge, no virus is resident.

2. Recently, I added a SVGA board to my system. Since I am still looking
for the right SVGA monitor (you won't believe how much it costs here ...),
I hooked it up to my old INTRA mono monitor. Now, this board (using
Tseng Lab. BIOS), is capable of emulating everything there is - Hercules
mode included. Since my old card was a Hercules adapter, I just installed
it to that mode. Now, when I start Windows 3.0 (Enhanced mode), it seems
that *about* 8 pixels are missing off the left boarder.
I know all about CRTC registers - I even tried to play a bit with it.
However, doing so outside Windows won't help - since Windows modifies it.
Doing so *inside* windows, you get *a virtual CRTC* - and a useless one,
for changing its registers change nothing on the screen.
Now, I know the problem is with the monitor - 'cause I hooked up
several other monitors, and all but the low end mono class worked fine.
However, I would really be happy to know I can still use my old monitor -
   if I ever need to.

I would be very thankful if anyone out there can shed some
        light on this ...

        Baruch
