dsampson@x102a.harris-atd.com (sampson david 58163) (07/24/90)

The charter for this news group did not include the transmission of large
executable files. If you (David in particular and others who have sent
executables recently) cannot live with the procedures already in place
in comp.binaries.ibm.pc, please put in the effort to set up a news group
for windows binaries.

I can not be silent any longer. Until there is a separate news group
for MS-Windows specific binaries, I have no problem with this.
Our site, like many others, can not (or at least, we are not allowed
to) FTP binary files, and comp.binaries.ibm.pc seems far too general.

So:

What would it take to start a MS-Windows specific binary group?

(Also, I would prefer if .EXE/.COM files were not ZIP'ed, to
remove one additional chance for corruption. Personal opinion...)

Neither can I. Who died and made Goodearl queen??? I like the binaries.
If you cannot live with that, tuff. While windows binaries may technically
belong in comp.binaries.ibm.pc, that would be totally inappropriate
considering there is a separate discussion for windows also.
EVERY effort I have seen in the last year to establish a special
news group for windows binaries or windows source has been met with
the comments (probably from people with good FTP access to someplace
that has them.) that "we don't need it" or " the news bandwidth is
too full already". I think there are a lot of
people, including myself, who disagree. There are so many "junk"
newsgroups out there that do nothing, that having a newsgroup for
windows binaries (that would at least be useful for a few people)
can do any more harm to the new bandwidth that has been already done.
I suggest, Mr. Goodearl, that if you don't like binaries appearing
here, that *YOU* set up a separate newsgroup, and quit trying
to dictate the actions of others.

What would be inappropriate would be passing binaries off as a non binary
discussion. The main reason for having binary groups is to allow individual
sysadmins to control the type of stuff that passes through their system. It
is also why we have separate source groups, forsale groups, biz groups and
others. There are many people on Usenet who don't feel that binary postings
are a proper use of the net (I am one) but rather than try to dictate what
others can and cannot use their own machines for we simply select what we
personally are going to receive or propogate using our own equipment. Each
site should have this freedom and innapropriate postings remove this right.

I am directing followups to news.misc and news.sysadmin as this is not a
comp.windows.ms question and really has an effect on people who don't
even read c.w.m.
