A friend of mine brought this to my attention. After winning at SoliTaire, the cardgame included with windows, he notices that the falling of the cards is not smooth but slows down at random points. He has a 1024x768 screen. I at first thought this might be due to Windows checking the other Windows message queues. But the only programs running were the Program Manager and File Manager. I did not think these two programs were capable of background work and therefore thought Windows does not have to check those particular message queues.
