[comp.windows.ms] Using 8514 fonts with Super VGA

aap@cbnewsl.att.com (alan.a.parker) (08/02/90)

Several people have asked about using the 8514 fonts with
Super VGA boards. I got the following procedure from Video
Seven Technical Support. It works with my Video 7 VRAM-VGA
at 1024x768 resolution and my AT&T VDC600 (a Paradise board)
at 800x600 resolution using the sv800 generic driver.

To install the 8514 fonts:

1: Copy expand.exe from Windows Distribution Disk 2 to somewhere in
    your path.

2:  Insert Disk 1 if 5 1/4" or Disk 2 if 3 1/2"

3:  Run the following command:
      expand a:8514fix.fon c:\windows\system
    replacing c:\windows as necessary with the place you have windows
    installed.

4: Repeat step 3 with the files 8514oem.fon and 8514sys.fon

5: edit the windows system.ini file, changing

      fixedfon.fon=vgafix.fon
          to
      fixedfon.fon=8514fix.fon

      oemfonts.fon=vgaoem.fon
          to
      oemfonts.fon=8514oem.fon

      fonts.fon=vgasys.fon
          to
      fonts.fon=8514sys.fon

6: Run windows, the display fonts should now be larger than before.

7: Using the windows control pannel, install the following fonts:
      courf.fon
      helvf.fon
      tmsrf.fon
      symbolf.fon

    Do not remove the corresponding xxxe.fon fonts

Thanks to Video Seven Technical Support for this procedure.
