[comp.windows.ms] Trident Drivers for Win 3.0

dlou@dino.ucsd.edu (Dennis Lou) (07/27/90)

OKay, ignorant me didn't pay attention to the postings about the
Trident drivers for Windows 3.0. Now I just bought some more memory
and plunked the $50 for the upgrade and am stuck with std vga drivers.

I have a Platinum VGA card with Trident chipset, 512k and
1024x768x16, 640,480,256, etc.

How can I get the drivers for Windows 3.0?

Please E-mail the responses. Thanks.

hmmm, I included a bogus newsgroup in the list and it returned my
article.... I am not sure whether the other groups made it, so I'll
repost.,..

------------

A couple weeks ago, I posted a request for the Trident drivers for
MS-Windows 3.0. Too many responded for me to get back to all of you,
so here's the post. Only the last two are interesting...

I am also looking for drivers (for both Window 3.0 and X on Unix)
for my trident board. I'll greatly appreciate any information you
received from the net.

Dennis,

I'm new to the net and didn't see the previous postings. If you get
an answer please forward the particulars to me so I can get those
	drivers.

Thanks,
	Carl

I think I saw those on Cica.cica.indiana.edu

Oh yeah, in the pub/pc/win3 directory

You may have heard that the Trident policy as to the distribution method of
their new drivers is somewhat unclear. They wrote to me in June that the
drivers should be ready by the end of June (obviously they weren't) and that
owners of non-Trident manufactured cards with Trident chip sets should pay
30 dollars for the upgrade. I have seen more recent rumours that anyone who
received the new drivers would be allowed to distribute them via FTP sites.

Anyway, it looks very obvious to me that the drivers are not ready yet anyway.
If you have any more recent information, I would be interested to know
and if you actually manage to get the drivers...

I'm looking for those drivers too, so would you please forward the information
how to get them to me. (ftp address is enough).

Thanks,

Harri Pasanen

. The drivers are available on CompuServe, as file V2KW30.LZH (I think
that's right) in the non-MS drivers library in the MSWIN forum. To unpack
it, you'll need LHARC (available as LH113C.EXE, self-unpacking; to locate
it, GO IBMFF to run the IBM File Finder).
I downloaded, unpacked and installed the 800*600*16 driver last night
(I'm running a TVGA with 256k) and it really makes a difference. I can now
get 80 columns of text on the screen without maximizing the window. The
Windows SETUP needs all the unpacked files in a single directory. I copied
them to a diskette for my B: drive, and gave SETUP the path, but when it
went to actually copy the files, it insisted on trying to read the A: drive.
So I copied again to a floppy and stuck it in A: and SETUP was happy. Then
it told me I needed to add DRIVER=EGA.DRV to my CONFIG.SYS, but when I went
to reboot, EGA.DRV was bad/missing. Well, it turns out there's no EGA.*
anywhere in my Windows directory or on the Windows installation disks, so I
deleted that line, rebooted again and all was well.
   Happy downloading!

dhf@linus.mitre.org (David H. Friedman) (08/09/90)

. As I mentioned a few articles back, the drivers are available in the
MSWIN forum on CompuServe. I'm sure many people would be grateful if someone
could make the file available from an FTP site. I don't have access from
here, or if I do, then I don't know the procedure (OK, so flame me). I've
already had email from people asking me to mail them the files, and while
I don't mind helping individuals, I'd rather see something done that would
benefit the greatest number through a single effort, before I start mailing.
FTP site managers, here's your chance to do a good deed! -dhf

Come on, PLLLEAASE make them available for ftp and quick. If they are
on Compuserve they can be on Internet as well. So that fellow who
tried to restrict them for Trident BBS was wrong (IMHO).
