I had a very strange problem with Windows last night on a new 386SX system I was setting up. These were the problems: 1) Whenever I bring Windows up in 386 mode there is a long pause between the screen clear to black and the background being painted. This pause is about 30-45 seconds. This pause does not occur if I start Windows in real mode. 2) When I boot the system it shows no extended memory available. The system has 4 MB and other than himem and smartdrv there are no extended memory applications or drivers loaded. Smartdrv is configured for 2048 max, 512 K minimum. 3) The Program Manager crashed while attempting to add Toolbook, which by the way didn't add itself to the PM as it usually does. After it crashed there were no application groups left, only a blank canvas to stare at. Any suggestions here as to what I should look for? I've played with Windows and Toolbook on a PS/2 and it went completely different than this experience. Is this most likely hardware?
