TOPIC ONE: my folks have a new pontiac. the owners manual recommends 10W-30 oil for our (chicagoland) winter driving conditions and straight 30 for summer temperatures. the manual specifically says "10W-40 oil should not be used under any conditions". 5W oils are not mentioned at all. 1. i think 10W-40 is specifically not recommended because the oil would thin out too much at operating temperatures. is this the correct assumption? 2. if 5W-30 oil were used in the winter, would this be bad for the car? why? it seems to me you'd always want the lowest "W" number available. what don't i understand? TOPIC TWO: what is the viscosity rating (eg, 10W-30) for amoco ultimate synthetic motor oil? is it going to be sold only in amoco service stations (i haven't seen it in any stores yet)? what's the price compared to mobil 1? paul novak ihuxm!pnovak
