I have received several responses to my question about who gets the right of way on traffic circles in New Jersey (and elsewhere) that I thought I'd share: --------------------------------------------- From: ulysses!smb (Steven Bellovin) It varies from state to state; New Jersey is the opposite of North Carolina, for example. From: ihnp4!zinfandel!joe (Joe Weinstein) About circles... Those vehicles in the circle should have right-of-way over those trying to get into the circle. This is standard in Britain and most other countries, with the notable exception of France where in the circle around the Arc d'Triumphe (sp?) ten avenues converge and entrants have right of way. This spot is the most densely accidented place in France and any other place in the world on a per day basis. --------------------------------------------- >From dma Thu Nov 8 08:02 EST 1984 remote from houxf In NJ the cars in the circle have the right of way. They are going "straight ahead". The cars entering are "turning". The person ENTERING a traffic circle, in New Jersey, has the right-of-way. This stems from the another law that states the person on the right has the right-of-way. Another rule based on the same reasoning, is that when making a left turn, the approaching vehicle going in the other direction, toward you, has the right-of-way. Hope this helps. These rules fall into the realm of careless driving laws. Roy W. H. Secondary roads must yield the right of way. This is what makes circles so dangerous, someone unfamiliar with the roads doesn't have time to figure out whether he has the right of way or not. These rules apply to New Jersey. --------------------------------------------- >From stan Fri Nov 9 10:01 EST 1984 remote from clyde Who has the right of way on traffic circles? --- I do, of course. :-) ---------------------------------------------
