[comp.windows.ms] Problem: Why not Standard Mode?

crm@icad.com (Christopher McConnell) (09/18/90)

I have an AT 286 clone with 1meg of memeory and a 30 meg hard drive. It is
running at 8mhz, which is slow but ok for what I do with the machine. I can
only get windows to run in real mode. Shouldn't I be able to use standard
mode also? I am running DOS 3.1. When I try to run standard mode, I get
the Microsoft Windows 3 title screen and then the system hangs. I have to
power down to reboot. My system starts up with the following:

Enhanced Graphic Adapter Basic Time Inc. (c) Copyright 1986 Version 1.2

AT Bios V.105 Copyright Award Software, Inc.
EV8603
01024 Kilobytes Memory Good

<machine then clears the screen and checks the A drive>

A copy of the EGA device driver is being installed

C>echo off

C>

<at this point I can type win/r to run in real mode or just
 win to hang the system.>

My Autoexec.bat looks like:

echo off
prompt $p$g
path c:\windows;c:\util;c:\dos;c:\sys;c:\emacs;
set temp=c:\windows\temp

My Config.sys looks like:

device=c:\himem.sys
device=c:\sys\nnansi.sys
device=c:\windows\smartdrv.sys 384 0
files=30
buffers=10
device=c:\windows\ega.sys

Is there anything I can change which can let me run in standard mode?

Any help in solving this mystory would be greatly appreciated.
