Back in the days when I used to read Car & Driver one of the editorials had something to say about Motor Trend's Car of the Year award. Evindently this editor was contacted by a marketing type representing a car company. He was interested in knowing if Car & Driver had picked their Car of the Year and if they hadn't, how much ($$$) it would cost this car company to have their car the chosen one. It came out in the conversation that that's the way Motor Trend chooses their Car of the Year. Maybe they've changed their tactics over the years, maybe not. BTW, I own an '83 GTI and the '85 GTI sounds real exciting but it does look strange picking a car that isn't available yet.
