[comp.windows.ms] Trouble in standard mode

efowler@milton.u.washington.edu (Eric Fowler) (09/18/90)

Greetings Netlanders!
I have been having trouble running Windows on an Epson in standard
mode. I have an Epson Equity 386/20 with win3, 3 megs extended, Video7
VGA, no network, no printer, no nuthin' nonstandard nohow. Windows fails
spectacularly in standard more, e.g. it reboots or locks up totally
immediately. Enhanced mode seems to be OK. Some possibly relevant facts:

(1) A friend remarks that Epsons use a nonstandard set of interrupts for
the video.

(2) Another friend reports that he had the same problem with a Video7
board. The V7 people gave him a program called V7DIAG.EXE (or something
like that) and some instructions for setting dipswitches. He says he followed
them and it did not work, but I thought I would mention it anyway.

(3) I have the standard windows 3 VGA driver installed. Trying to install
the video7 driver when I install Win3 gets a screenfull of total trash
in the middle of the installation process(trash = wavy lines, snow, etc).

(4) I have done enough windows related work to know that this is not the
garden variety of HIMEM.SYS problem. No device drivers except SMARTDRV
load after HIMEM. The memory in enhanced mode seems to be OK.

Any help appreciated.

Don't know.

Which V7 board? They make several. I have a Fastwrite VGA and it works fine in
all modes on my 386/25 at 800 X 600 resolution.

I have no problems with either the V7 driver (Only the 800 X 600 16 color mode
works with a Fastwrite, the board cannot handle higher modes.) or the Win 3
640 X 480 256 color mode.
