[comp.windows.ms] Questions about IBM PS/2 and Windows 3.0

blm@aquarium.ecn.purdue.edu (Brian L Moore) (08/29/90)

I want to purchase a machine to run windows at home, but I don't know
really what I need/want.

I have almost decided on the hard/software listed below. I am looking
for thoughts/suggestions from people who have a similar setup.

I am considering buying the following, which is a package deal from IBM:
	HARDWARE
	--------
	- IBM PS/2, Model 30/286 (80286 processor, 10 MHz)
	- 1 MB Memory
	- 30 MB Hard Disk
	- 8513 Color Monitor
	- 3.5" disk, VGA board, Mouse, serial and parallel port

	SOFTWARE
	--------
	- DOS 4.0
	- Microsoft Windows 3.0
	- hDC Windows Utilities (Academic Edition)
	- Microsoft Word for Windows (Academic Edition)
	- ZSoft SoftType (Academic Edition)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Please respond via E-mail if possible, as I do not read news often.

Thanks!

Hi,
I thing that the choice you have made for the logiciels (except ZSoft who is
unknown by me) is very good. But your choice for the hardware is not.
If you want a fully exploitation of differents memories modes (for example if
you want use winword) you must have a 80386. If you have a 80286, MS-Windows 3
doesn't run in extended mode (it's the best mode who exploite the virtual mode
of 80386 proc.). The only interesting mode in the 80286 is the standart mode
(it's a mode who exploite only the physical memory installed in your AT). More
this mode run only if you have more 1Mb.
Generaly, MS-Windows 3 needs more that 2Mb. (4 Mb. for a run without problem)
I know that is more expensive but be carefull. If you buy a 80286 machine
(with less than 2Mb) winword will tells you quickly "Not enough memory".
If you want more informations on MS-Windows 3 and its installation you can send
me a mail.

Sorry for my english. Is not my "mothertong"
