: I have a 1984 Pontiac Trans-Am that has the H.O. V8 and and a 5-speed. When the car is cold, a muffled pop can be heard when letting up on the gas pedal during shifts. The problem disappears after driving about a third of a mile or if I take it very easy for that distance. I suspect that it's due to an overly rich mixture and may be worse here because of the altitude (5000 ft). The expert on this engine at my dealer says that this is normal, but that my car pops louder than usual. Anyway, I would like to know if any other Trans-Am/Z28 owners are experiencing the same problem and if it will damage my muffler or catalytic converter. I am somewhat reluctant to touch the choke or carburetor until I obtain more information on the computer control system, but if someone knows a solution, I'd like to hear about that too.
