[comp.windows.ms] Windows 3.0 386 enhanced mode problem

ballerup@diku.dk (Per G|tterup) (09/28/90)

Hi folks!

I've recently installed Windows 3.0 on my PS/2 model 80, so far so good.

Hardware data: 80386 with 80387, 4 Mb RAM, VGA 640x480x16.

If I run in real or standard mode, everything seems okay except for a minor
annoyance, see below.

But if I let it enter 386 enhanced mode as it defaults to on a 80386 machine,
it does something to my DAC (plain IBM VGA) to TOTALLY suppress the blue
component (the blue part of the RGB) of all colors!. Besides this it seems
to work just fine, running multitasking, printing etc.

I've checked with a program (a fractal generator) that manipulates the DAC
on its own, and if it tries REALLY HARD it can make some blue appear for a
fraction of a second before that unknown something kills it again.

Anybody got an idea what might cause this? - Is there something wrong with
my 386 kernel or some driver (which?), or do I need to do something special
in my *.INI files?

I've naturally got HIMEM.SYS running when I try this...

Now to the minor annoyance. Every other time I begin a windows session
(load windows for the first time since reboot), some of my icons in all non-
windows groups gets put on top of each other somewhat.

Anybody know what's causing that?

I've even tried to re-install windows from scratch but only to see the
same happen again (both problems).

Any help would be appreciated!!!

PS: Post or E-mail, I don't care!

--- Thanks in advance!!!

Not so surprising. Not if MS is still annoyed with IBM! :) :) :)

I've seen the same thing; it seems to be related to having ended a previous
session with the "save changes" box checked and several groups displayed
on the screen. The problems involves having tiled group displays which
are not active, but I haven't been able to figure out all of the conditions
necessary to set this up. What happens is that the white background
of the top group is transparent instead of white, and the icons on the
next layer are visible. The working solution is to click somewhere on
the top group (not on an icon); this makes the system rewrite the image
with opaque white and causes the lower-level icons to disappear. Irritating,
but relatively harmless if you know what to expect.

Incidentally, it happens with real, standard, and enhanced mode.
