i run win3 in enhanced mode on a 386 with 1M + 3M (extended) ram. i normally have at least one window open with the mks shell running (version 2.1). mouse is logitech; harddisk is single partition 68M. twice, win3 has had problems closing all the way out, resulting in a frozen system. on the following hard reboot, the harddisk has been corrupted. the first time, the system wouldn't boot from the disk, but i could read all files. trying to transfer the system files was unsuccessful. on the latest failure, the error message at boot time was "missing operating system". no files were accessible on the harddisk. fdisk reported a valid dos partition. the symptoms were reported to microsoft; they had no report of any similar problems. i mentioned mks because it usurps the entire screen on occassion and has even kicked me out of windows, entirely. i wondered if this might seriously affect the caching done by smartdrive and thereby corrupt the harddisk. any ideas? thanks, sid cowles voice: +1-415-596-3971 internet: uucp: sid@sybase.com {pacbell, sun,{uunet, ucbvax}!mtxinu}!sybase!sid scowles@humpty.llnl.gov {backbone}!lll-winken!humpty!scowles scowles@ccc.nersc.gov
