[comp.windows.ms] X-Windows Server for MS Windows

reynolds@milton.u.washington.edu (Michael Reynolds) (10/05/90)

Hey, has anybody tried any X-Windows servers for MS Windows? Our campus is
all Unix, and several front-ends to campus databases are being written to run
on X-Windows platforms, the idea being that they don't want to mess with the
DOS world at all. I would like to find a fairly speedy X-Windows implemen-
tation that will run (I hope this isn't wishful thinking) as a MS Windows app,
so that cut-and-paste and whatnot would be possible. We network using 3c503
enet cards and packet driver right now.

I've seen adds for "XVision" from IniPress Software for $449 and "X11/AT" from
Integrated Inference Machines for $495. At least one person has told me that
his experience with XVision is that it runs OK but is slow.

So what has been people's experience? Is there cut-and-paste between MS
Windows apps and X-Windows shells in any of these? Is performance acceptable
on a, say, 16MHz 386 with 4Mb of RAM? Do these run on packet driver? NDIS?
Posting to the net is OK if you think there's general interest, or respondents
can email me and I will post summary.

Thanks for any info!

With Quarterdeck making their run with DESQview/X let's expand this
question.
   * Will we see full X Windows support in MS Windows (client, server,
     and XLIB)? When? Who?
   * An old posting from Microsoft stated that they were working on
a Motif API for MS Windows. When? ... or should we call
     Quarterdeck?
   * With Microsoft and IBM as OSF member companies, shouldn't we
PC applications developers hedge our bets and expand our potential
markets by seeking and targeting X/Motif software platforms?
I would like to hear from anyone who has or is contemplating developing
a product which allows me to target XLib/Motif and cover MS Windows
platforms. (XVT is one but misses the mark.)

Thanks!
