I've got a '64 Corvair convertible that has gotten more comments than I would have ever expected. It is in reasonably good shape, with a pretty nice paint job. Since I've owned it (~1 year) I've had at least 8-10 offers right off the street to buy it. And these people were reasonably serious. I've had my share of problems with it, but when that top goes down...all is forgotten. If I can afford it, I'd like to keep it after it is paid off and start looking for another collectible convertible, like a Mustang. Sometimes I think it would be nice to have a newer car, they're not at all as "crude" as mine for example. But, as much as I enjoy the comfort of my friends Honda Accord, it doesn't get the stares and finger pointing that my Corvair does. It's fun and satisfying in a self indulgent way. One evening I was driving into our local college town (Chapel Hill, N.C.) and was passed by a carload of younger people (they all look younger to me now). They called out to me and asked what kind of car I was driving! Besides them looking 16, it didn't help to have that question asked! Why, I even had my top down last night, it was 60 deg. at 8:30. I don't know if other convertible owners are as crazy as I am, but if it is sunny out and above 40 deg., then the top goes down. Isn't that why we have heaters?? And gloves and jackets??? I think I would much rather purchase a classic collectible convertible than a new model convertible. Besides being less expensive initially, they will at least hold their value and may even appreciate. Long live the classics... Marc mcnc!dvamc!ms
