Thank you to all those people who mailed me their thoughts on what the problem might be. Very help full advice. The problem ended up being rather obscure and I still am not sure as to why the problem exists. My hardware configuration is as follows: 386-25 with 4MB Tricom (Tseng) 1024 1MB SVGA Microsoft Bus Mouse The problem for some reason lay with the VGA board. Things would run fine in standard and real mode, but Windows would crash when I tried to fire up in enhanced mode. The solution was to install a device called "FASTBIOS" that came with the board. I did that and windows very cheerfully placed me in enhanced mode. Sooooo the final configuration is as follows: CONFIG.SYS: BREAK=ON FILES=30 BUFFERS=30,8 DEVICE=C:\FASTBIOS.SYS << The magic device driver from TSENG DEVICE=C:\HIMEM.SYS << Win 3.0 version DEVICE=C:\EANSI.SYS << TSENG ANSI.SYS to support SVGA modes device=C:\WIN\smartdrv.sys 2048 512 SHELL=C:\COMMAND.COM /P /E:256 INSTALL=C:\DOS\SHARE.EXE << gets rid of annoying DOS warning AUTOEXEC.BAT @ECHO OFF PATH C:\DOS;C:\WIN;C:\BIN PRINT /D:LPT1 SET TEMP=C:\WIN\TEMP SET COMSPEC=C:\COMMAND.COM PROMPT $P$G Although the problem is solved, could someone maybe shed some light as to why FASTBIOS fixed the problem? I was running at the same resolution during the entire episode and I didn't see any mention of this requirement in the docs. Anyway, thanks to one and all for your help. -- Ron Haukenfrers ron@cs.athabascau.ca (403)675-6332 Educational Computing Athabasca University
