ETHERNET/Windows In my pursuit of the ideal office I was wondering if there exists some combination of hardware and software to directly connect our Apple LaserWriter Plus printer to our Ethernet LAN and have the ability to access this printer from Windows 3.0? We currently have our LaserWriter connected to a Zenith '386 AT compatible via a seriel port operating at 9600 baud. We use Excelan Ethernet cards connected to a partially implemented 15 computer LAN (no-dedicated server, awaiting a gateway to our WAN). Lacking a dedicated server to perform print spooling and dedicated file sharing I would like to connect the LaserWriter to a "black box" via either its seriel port or its AppleTalk port and in turn connect the "black box" to our LAN cable. I suspect that the Windows SPOOLER and/or configuration programs will have to be setup to explicitly recognize the LAN and attached printer. I can not even guess how the LaserWriter would handle multiple requests to print a document, or how the SPOOLER (Print Manager?) would interact with the LaserWriter in such a situation. Has anyone done anything remotely like this? Where should I look for relavent information? Who might I call/e-mail? barry floyd MIS - HRO - RPI

I've seen ads for Dayna's $499 EtherTalk. From what I understand it's essentially a rather specific brdige connecting an Ethernet and a LocalTalk network. (801) 531-0203. I don't know whose software you'd use for print redirection. $499 is certainly a lot cheaper than a FastPath. If anyone is actually using this device, please post. Ross ross@cattell.psych.upenn.edu

We've been using Dayna's EtherTalk bridge (or whatever its called) and it is very limited. It will take an appletalk packet that is on ethernet and put it onto a localtalk network and vice versa. There is no protocol translation so you can't use it to access the laserprinter via TCP/IP on the ethernet side, and you can only use it for printers, which seemed a bit odd. -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- whelan@ (uhunix.uhcc.hawaii.edu || uhccux.BITNET || nextsrv.wslab.hawaii.edu)
