The insertion of the EGA.SYS device line in the config.sys file appears to
be a minor bug in the install program. The EGA.SYS file is not installed by
the install program, and is not needed by either the regular or high resolution
VGA modes. The presence of the line in the config.sys file is probably benign,
although your system will probably flash an error message as it boots,
complaining that it can't find the file EGA.SYS. Use a text editor to remove
this spurious line from your CONFIG.SYS file. The 1024x768 ATI driver really
does work. Check however that your board has version 4 or later ROMS
(indicated as V4 during boot-up). V3 and earlier boards will not work.

This may be a dumb question, but I've read all the docs I have, and can't
come up with a solution: I can't get Windows 3 to run in 1024x768x16 mode,
even though I have a 512K ATI VGA Wonder. The setup puts a line in the
CONFIG.SYS, device = c:\win3\EGA.SYS. There is no such file ANYWHERE on
my harddrive, nor on my ATI drivers disks. So, the question: can anybody
tell me why this is happening, and help?

The 1024x768x16 mode only works with VGA Wonder boards that are V4.x or
higher. Version 3.x boards can only use the 800x600 mode. ATI says they
are working on 1024x768 for older boards as well as the 256 colour modes
but God knows when they will be ready (actually he probably doesn't know).

The line device = ega.sys is useless and can be deleted (I did to no ill).

For all those who flamed ATI about their user support, I phoned their number,
got routed to and answering machine and within a minute had left my name and
address requesting WIN 3 drivers. Three weeks later (which is reasonable given
Canada Post's record) I received an entire upgrade for all ATI drivers and
software (4 disks). I personally think this is excellent customer support.
A year ago, ATI sent me a BIOS upgrade (2 EPROMs) for my card. In both cases
there was no charge, not even shipping. If more companies take ATI's attitude
towards customer service and support, maybe they'd be as successfull.

Your main problem is that you don't have the correct
drivers for the ATI VGA Wonder. Check out your local
BBS or cica.cica.indiana.edu for a file containing the
correct ATI drivers for 1024x768x16 in Windows 3.

ATI has a BBS at phone # (416) 756-4591 from which I downloaded their
latest mouse & Windows drivers. Worked fine; you just need X,Y,Zmodem
xfer protocols. I called early on Sunday morning from Utah & got in
on first ring. NOTE: They had 3 copies of windows drivers with sort
of different names & comments in their available file list -- I
downloaded all three (unnecessarily) to be safe taking the whole hour.
Don't you do the same (unnecessarily).
