I got my upgade to DESQview-386 v. 2.3 yesterday and install the new QEMM 5.1. QEMM is a memory manager that can replace himem.sys to provide XMS support. QEMM also allows one to load programs in the unused portions of the memory between 640K and 1024K. By using QEMM's ability to 'LOADHI' I was able to reclaim 74K of conventional memory in a DOS window inside Windows 3.0 enhanced mode. I went from 512K free to 586K free. This was great, however I then ran into a problem. When running Fractint for Windows-Vers 1.00(FFW) with a DOS window opened and QEMM for my XMS, windows quits working and I am left out in DOS. FFW will work find if no DOS window is opened, and it will work for a while when a DOS window is opened. The procedure that I found to reproduce the problem from inside windows: 1) Open 'DOS prompt' 2) Open FFW a) choose 'Options' from FFW menu b) choose 'image settings' c) choose '1024x768' d) choose 'OK' At this point I am flung out of windows and back into DOS. If I I go back to himem.sys for XMS the problem disappears. Questions: 1) Can anyone reproduce this? 2) Where do you think the problem is? FFW? Windows? QEMM? other? 3) Any solutions?
