[comp.windows.ms] Winfract and 1024x768x16 mode

bert@helix.nih.gov (Bert Tyler) (10/24/90)

A few days ago, I asked people who had both version 1.0 of Fractint for
Windows and a SuperVGA adapter capable of 1024x768x16 mode in Windows
to email me and tell me 1) the brand of their adapter and 2) whether
FFW worked with it in that mode. I have the results of that poll and
some extra information.

First, the results: in 1024x768x16 video mode, FFW works with the
following adapter/drivers

      Orchid Prodesigner
      Video-7 VRAM and Video-7 1024i
      TSENG (Tricom)
      TSENG 4000 (STB)

But not with the following (the symptom is that the image is drawn in
the right place horizontally, but a few inches below the right place
vertically):

      ATI
      Trident 8800
      Genoa (6400?)

Furthur, Gary Mussar ran some tests on his ATI, and found that he could
sometimes force FFW to draw its images in the right place if he "exposed"
its window in certain ways (maximizing and then minimizing the Program
Manager's window), but then any attempt to move FFW's window caused the
same problems again. At this point, and given that FFW works with
every other video resolution that we know about, I'm throwing my hands up,
releasing version 2.0 of FFW with full source, and hoping that some Windows
Wizard can find out what the #@$%!& is going on.
