[comp.windows.ms] Excelan and Windows 3.0

Barry Bailey (11/01/90)

Anyone use Excelan products (hardware/software) and Windows 3.0? Has
Excelan announced/delivered and Windows 3.0 specific products?

Several years ago our office installed an EXCELAN ethernet LAN (Host
Access, Host Share, Socket Library, TCP/IP FTP and TELENET support).
We can load the network and share resources (virtual disk drives)
from DOS then start w Windows 3.0 without problems (drives are
recognized as network drives). I haven't had much luck running server
software in background and starting REDIR from Windows doesn't seem
to work (everthing has to be set up in DOS first).

Any comments, thoughts, information, etc. would be greatly
   appreciated.

I believe Excelan is a wholey owned subsidiary of Novell, they had
offered Novell drivers for their hardware/software packages (LAN
Workplace). I am less interested in Novell and more interested in
purchase PC-NFS drivers (available on here on campus). Information
about PC-NFS running under Windows 3.0 on Excelan hardware/software
would be nice, but probably asking too much).

Does PC-NFS enable each PC ('386 with 4M + swapfile) to share local
resources in background under Win 3.0 (i.e. act as a server)?

PC-NFS does not run over Excelan EXOS cards. The recommended solution
for running NFS over EXOS cards is BWNFS/EX (NFS for the Lan WorkPlace for DOS)
available from Beame & Whiteside Software Ltd. (416) 648-6556.

PC-NFS, BWNFS or other PC based NFSs don't act as servers. The PC's
can share resources on Unix, VMS , ... hosts, but not from each other.
