[comp.windows.ms] ATM for Windows

oppenhei@umd5.umd.edu (Richard Oppenheimer) (10/21/90)

I have been plying with Adobe Type Manager for Windows for about two days now.
I got the ATM (comes with Courier, Helvtica, Times and Symbol) and the Adobe
Type Set I library (includes Bodoni Poster, Cottonwood, Freestyle Script,
Hobo, Linotext, Trajan and VAG Rounded Bold) and this is really great. I have
not yet discovered any bugs or incompatibilities, although, I understand that
AMI Pro is the real problem package for all font software and I do not use AMI.

I have used ATM with WFW, Excel, Write, Paint, Micrografx Charisma, and
Crosstalk for Windows (does not like proportional fonts). I am holding the
printout from an Apple Laserwriter and looking at the WFW document on screen
(and this is not in Print Preview) and they are identical. Everything on the
screen is where it should be and looks like the font it is supposed to be.

All I can say is WOW. WOW!

Printing worked fine even though I print to a file and then transport the file
to the printer. Next I will see how it fairs on an HP Laserjet II with only
512k. Will let you all know how things turn out.

Well I have been using ATM4W with Ami Pro for several days. It seems to work
fine. I have found that the original non-hinted PS fonts created by
SoftType, while generally supported OK by ATM, will get hosed if you do
a word "underline" attribute: the "line" is in the text not under it.
Rumor has it that SoftType will/does not have Type 1 hints.

Does ATM slow the system down much? We have a department running 286 12mhz
machines with 2 megs and WinWord runs fine, but I'm wondering if they will
bog down when the Windows Truetype comes in.

I haven't noticed any performance degradetion. I am using ATM on 386 16MHz
and 20MHz machines. My primary machine has a Video 7 VRAM which is a fairly
fast video card and my other machines have VGA with Mono displays. Your
milage may be different since I never run in standard or real modes and I
have at *least* 2 megs on all machines.

To further update my experiences, I have been having some problems printing
full pages of ATM fonts on an HP Laserjet II with only 512k. And when I try
to use non-resident fonts on my postscript printer which I have to print to
a file and then transport over my network, I can't get it to work. If the
printer is attached to the computer though it works fine. Still, I have not
played with it completely enough to draw any conclusions. I have been more
pleased than fustrated.
