[comp.windows.ms] Problem with Windows

wasnsr@nmt.edu (T.O.R.S.O.) (11/03/90)

I am hoping somebody can help me out with a problem I
just ran up on with windows. Yesterday I noticed that
for some reason, Windows will no longer run any of my
non-windows applications, i.e.- Word Perfect, Harvard Graphics
,Procomm Plus, Cshow, various games, even the dos shell. Whenever
I try to run any of them it gives me the error "Insufficient Memory
to Run Application". Now, as of two or three days ago, I could run
all of these programs through windows (both full screen and windowed).
Now, I can't run any of them, even with everything but the Program
Manager closed. Here are some of the particulars of my system.

		Clone 386 20MHz
		2 MB RAM
		SVGA MONITOR & CARD
Windows 3.0 (running in 386 Enhanced Mode)
here are copies of my current Autoxec.bat & config.sys-

I checked through both of them myself and could not
see anything different about them. Also, when I pick
"About Program Manager" from the help menu, it says that
system usage is about 70-75% and that my free memory is
1500K. When I run the windows application FREEMEM that
I got off cica, it shows me with about 522K free with
everything except the program manager closed.

I am at a loss, so if any you Windows experts out
there see anthing that I missed (which I probably have).

Please, please please tell me what it is.

			Thanks in advance,
				Wayne,

P.S.- if you can't see anything obvious and you want more
information about my system, send me e-mail.

The original post indicated that suddenly "insufficient memory" was preventing
DOS apps from running in Windows.

Looking at the provided config I see 2 megs RAM and a Super VGA card. My guess
is a real fancy Windows Background which in my experience subtracts from the
640K DOS memory available. I use a background of NONE or a small tile!
Let me know if this was it
