[net.followup] One of DEC's best-kept secrets

Roy Smith asks:

Can sombody please explain to me just what the "DEC Engineering Network"
	is?

Digital's internal network, officially called "the Easynet", is one of DEC's
best-kept secrets. In rough numbers, it consists of about 5,000 computers
worldwide, somewhat more than half of which are actually running on the net at
any instant. As for what it's used for ... work, mostly. Personally, I have no
idea how many persons have access to the net. Technical people all do. Sales
personnel do. Many clerical persons do.

Part of this secret, incidentally (oops, here I go again), is that the computers
on this net range from TOPS10 and TOPS20 machines to VAX 8600s through Micro-
VAXes down to DECmates. All sizes of machine, same net. I hope this doesn't
sound too much like marketing hype; I'm not a marketing person. But all this
stuff really does work, and in talking and corresponding to people, I find they
have no idea about the extent of Digital's network and networking abilities.

My from-Arpanet address below, for instance, says that I'm on node JAWS of the
Easynet, or in DECnet terms, JAWS::KAISER. The from-Usenet address, of course,
means the same thing. Feel free to mail me questions; I'll answer them as best
I can, as time permits. No price inquiries, please. For that, see a sales rep.
