[comp.windows.ms] Can't setup applications in Windows Setup

lasky@iris.ucdavis.EDU (Ty Lasky) (11/07/90)

I have run into a problem with Windows 3.0, and I don't have any idea
how to solve this. When I install windows, if I ask it to search the
hard disk for applications, the installation process hangs, and I have
to reboot the computer, and redo the entire installation process. This
is a pain, but I got around it by skipping the install applications step
in the main installation.

However, my plan was to then use the Windows Setup routine inside of
Windows, and just use the 'setup applications' option in the menu.
Unfortunately, whenever I select this option, I get an "unrecoverable
application error", so I have to add every application manually, using
the 'New' option in the Program Manager.

I have a 386/33 system, with a 160 Meg Micropolis ESDI hard disk, and
Adaptec Controller card with 64k Cache.

Does anyone know what is wrong here? Is there a solution?

Thanks in advance,

Ty Lasky

Well, you could try the cliche solution to problems on machines with big
disks, the good ol' VirtualHDIRQ=False. But even if you don't get it to
work, there is a *much* faster way that using the 'new' option in the
Program Manager.

Open up the Program Manager and the File Manager simultaneously. Find the
executable files in the File Manager, and just drag them over to a window
in the Program Manager. This will automagically create an icon for them
wherever you dropped it. If you don't like the way it turned out, you
can always change it with the "Properties..." menu item.

This happens on my system as well, but NOT when I use HIMEM instead of QEMM.
Perhaps that is the problem. (I DO have QEMM 5.1 !!)

I had seen similar problems when I run setup and have a path > 127 bytes.

Unfortunately, that doesn't give you the benefits that a well written .pif
will give you. I would recommend that you do spend some time when you set
up your Windows to write .pif's for each of the applications that you will
run under Windows 3.0. I assume that you won't run just Windows apps, but
also DOS stuff. Time spent fine tuning .pif's will pay off.
