[comp.windows.ms] Can't get Expanded Memory in Windows !!

dve@mace.cc.purdue.edu (11/26/90)

	I've been trying to get windows3.0 to assign expanded memory
	to a non-windows application and have never succeeded. The
	manual says one can do this by using pif editor. This doesn't
	work for me at all. I have a Gateway2000 386SX and 4Megbites
	memory all as extended and I run windows in 386 enchanced mode.
	My config.sys contains:
		device=himem.sys
		device=mouse.sys
	as the first lines. The application in question is SmartWare II
	which is supposed to page to expanded memory if available when
	loading large files. But it just keeps paging to disk however number of
	KB of expanded memory I give it in its pif. (I tried this with
	only one application, namely the SmartWare II, running.)

	When I open a DOS window and run 'mem', I get something like,
	"... (large number here) total expanded memory, 0 bytes available...".
	This is the case even if I have only one window open.

	The manual also mentions EMM386.SYS but says that one need not
	use it if one runs in the enchanced mode.

	Have I set something wrong, or the manual is just joking.
	Any help is greatly appreciated.

I can't get it to work either, not only that I can't get the TC++ IDE to
recognize extended memory despite PIF settings.

Anyone have any ideas ?
