[comp.windows.ms] Looking for a humongous monitor

mathew@mantis.UUCP (mathew) (11/20/90)

I run Windows 3.0 on a 25MHz 386-based PC with 8MB of RAM and a VGA card. I'm
about to start some serious software development which requires some large
windows with lots of pixels. Therefore:

I'm looking for the highest resolution video adapter/monitor combination
available for the IBM PC. The product MUST be supplied with Windows 3.0
drivers, or else said drivers must be readily available to me. Note: We're a
UUCP site, so that means NO FTP.

To give you some idea, I've already found out about the ETAP monitors which
will do 1440 x 1080, and come with drivers. Can anyone beat that?

Price should be considered to be relatively unimportant; colour likewise.
(In fact, I think I prefer monochrome.)

Reply by mail, please; I'll summarize.

Sigma Designs makes something called a "laser view" ... 19" mono @ 1600x12??

Win3 drivers? ... I suppose so, as they had win2.1 drivers ...

I am in fact using one of these beasts with Win3 right now. The folks
at Sigma Designs sent me the new driver as soon as I called them. It
requires a somewhat non-standard installation procedure (read the
README.TXT file on the driver disk) and will only support
single-monitor systems :^(. I've found most (all?) commercial
software large-screen tolerant, but some ill-designed software such as
Troglobyte's Click! filer don't size properly. The version of the
Laser...er...L-View has only two shades of gray in addition to the
black and white, so some color icons lose out. One thing that really
shines is Adobe Type Manager. It's _GREAT_ in high-resolution.

Regards, Jim Adams
