I need help diagnosing a problem with a 1980
custom Mazda GLC, 5 speed with aprox. 70,000
miles. For the past 25,000 miles, during the
colder months (i.e. its starting again), my
"ALT" light and "exhaust system over-heating"
light will sometimes start to flash in unison
at about 2 Hz.
The frequency seems to be independent
of engine RPM or car speed (?). The intensity
of the lights varies from very bright to very
dim. Occasionally, the flashing is accompanied
by a slight knocking sound from the engine
area. The phenomena is very transient, non-
repeatable and always disappears whenever the
clutch is disengaged or a mechanic is approached.
Any help with this problem will be greatly
appreciated.
