[comp.windows.ms] Screen savers don't like DOS apps

yoon@aludra.usc.edu (Dae-Kyun Yoon) (12/09/90)

Hi fellow netters !!

I'v been using windows 3.0 in since it's been official released.
Up to now I'v tried a couple of the screen savers for windows, and
couldn't satisfied with any of these. Here is what I'd experienced
with various screen savers.

o magic : My system went stuck as soon as screen saver started to
operate *while DOS window(windowed) was active*.

o egautil (for windows) : While I was out of windows, egautil
recognized only mouse not a keyboard. I was playing game at that
time. There was another problem but I can't recall it now.

o Screen Peace (v1.2+) : In most cases it worked fine. But I noticed problems
with "emtex" and "freemacs".(Of course both of them are DOS APPS)
When I intensionally break the execution of emtex or if the
execurion of "emtex" stops due to some errors, I type "x" which
is an exit command, and immediately system halts.
If I exit from "freemacs", there appears windows error message
saying "violation of system integrity", and the DOS shell dies.

BTW, I'v set option disabling screen saver while DOS app is active.

o MS (monitor saver) : I didn't try many times, as I had to click mouse
button on "registeration dialog" while loading the program. This
really bothers me especially for the applications which should
be automatically loaded during windows boot-up.

All the problems were related to only DOS apps.

Could someone add any comments on my experiences with screen savers ?
Could someone recommend any other screen savers (PD or shareware) ?

BTW, I am running windows on:
	386sx clone
4M memory (2M on mother board 2M on expansion board)
	ATI Vgawonder 512K with mouse.
	SONY 1304 Multi SCan monitor.
	78M HD (ST 251-1 + Perstor PS180FN controller)

Running 4DOS as my primary shell.

Thanks...
