[comp.windows.ms] XVision query

dd2x+@andrew.cmu.edu (David Eugene Dwiggins) (12/09/90)

Has anyone used this product? What version of X does it support?
(R2, R3, R4) Has anyone found any dealers for it that offer it at
a reduced price? Does it support large bitmaps? Token Ring?

I've never seen this product demonstrated and I don't want to make
a $450 mistake.

Thanks in advance,

David Dwiggins

XVision 3.x supports X11R3...

XVision 4.x (due out in Q2 1991 ) will support X11R4...

The current release is 3.11 which was introduced to include international
keyboard support as well as increasing to 8 the number of (TCP/IP for Dos)
networks supported. The next release will be 3.2 which will support 256 colours.

Our Dealers in the USA are UniPress Software (+1 201 985 8000) and
GSS (+1 503 641 2200) and in the UK Spinx Limited (+44 (0)628 773311)
and Amarante Limited (+44 (0)707 275621). We also have dealers in Sweden,
Denmark, Finland, Germany, New Zealand, Norway and Italy.

Pricing is an individual dealers decision.

>Does it support large bitmaps?

Yes although running an X application that makes heavy use of large bitmaps will
be slower than a true XTerminal.

>Token Ring?

This is possible if you have an implementation of TCP/IP running over your TokenRing, such as Locus' TCP/IP for Dos product.

If you want an X Windows Server for DOS you won't be making a mistake with
XVision. The article on Page 116 of Unix World November 90 compares 3 X Window
Server for DOS and the Verdict concluded that "XVision from VisionWare Ltd.
was the best of the three revieved products... XVision also has some powerful
capabilities not available in the other two products ... considering the
functionality gained XVision is the best buy for the price." The article was
written by Steven Mikes.
