[comp.windows.ms] Colour printing from windows?

derek@ibmpcug.co.uk (Derek Jones) (12/18/90)

Hello windows users,

I have a Citizen swift 24 colour printer, and have discovered that
the paint program supplied with windows 3.0 doesn't print out in colour,
even though I have the recommended driver for the Citizen Epson emulation
with its colour option installed.

Q1: Does anyone know of a paint program that will print out in this
	combination in colour?

Q2: Does anyone know of a write type of program to do the same, (i.e.
allow highlighting of words say in red)?

Both will have to work under windows 3.0 to be of real use to me.

Please reply to me by mail and I'll summarise if requested.
Please use my preferred mail address rather than the return address of this
posting since I don't look here too often.

Thanks in advance.

In looking at the SDL (Supplemental Disk Library?) from Microsoft there are
(on disk 4) a couple of interesting files called genlib.dll and dmcolor.dll.
I asked Microsoft about these and they didn't have any documentation specific
to these. Poking around oemsetup.inf on this disk inticates that they
are used by the Brother 9 and 24 pin printer drivers and the Star 24 pin
printer driver and partially (genlib) by the Star 9 pin driver.

My guess is that there are two possibilities...

The first is that these might be the first printer drivers that CAN print
colour from WIndows apps like PaintBrush

The second and unfortunately the more likely is that the genlib and dmcolor
DLL's are seperated from the drivers because they are going to be common
between all drivers so why reproduce them over and over....

What I would like is someone with the Color Brother printers or the Color
24 pin Star printers to test out these drivers and report back to the net
letting others know whats up...

I got sdldisk4.zip from anonymous ftp at cica.cica.indiana.edu
in the /pub/pc/win3/sdl area.

I might even sell my slug printer and get the Star 24 pin colour if it really
does the ticket...

I had contacted Microsoft about the same problem using the IBM 5182
color graphics printer....the driver allowed me to select the color
ribbon, but paintbrush would not print in color....

Microsoft stated that Paintbrush will produce color output ONLY
on the HP PaintJet or a Color Postscript printer.....Bummer.

I can however print text in color using Word for Windows.
