[comp.windows.ms] Problems with WP 5.1 & Windows 3.0

mjw@wasp.eng.ufl.edu (Michael J. Wohlgemuth) (01/03/91)

I have a user with a Zenith 386 running at 16 MHz, with 3 Mbytes of
extended memory, Netware workstation shell version 3.01, and
QEMM 5.1. When running in enhanced mode, and using Word Perfect 5.1,
most of the times that he tries to access the floppy drive, he
gets an error and the option to retry or cancel. Either way, he
just gets the same error message back again. Any ideas as to what
might cause this?

Thanks
Mike

Sorry, I can't help you. I also have problems with WordPerfect 5.1 and
Windows 3.0. Here's my basic system set-up: 25 MHz Acer 1100 386, 4 MB,
Logitech TrackMan (bus version), Lantastic (only as a redirector though),
and Windows running in enhanced mode.

Some of the problems I have:

   * If I start up windows, and then start up WordPerfect as a full screen
DOS application, WordPerfect kills windows and exits straight to DOS
     when I exit a document via F7.

   * If I run WordPerfect from DOS before running windows, and then exit
WordPerfect and run windows, windows does not recognize any mouse input.

   * The above two problems are without running the Lantastic software. If
I start up Lantastic, enter windows, and then start up WordPerfect I
keep getting the error "wp.fil (0) not found" [or something to that
effect]. This error prohibits me from using, or even exiting,
     WordPerfect.

If anyone has any clues on how I can get WordPerfect 5.1, Windows 3.0,
and Lantastic to coexist peacefully, I would love to hear about it.

Thanks...Joakim

I don't know about Qemm, but there are two 'fixes' I've used with Win 3.0 and
WP 5.1:
a) get the updated disks from WP with bug fixes (number is 800-541-5096).

b) in your PIF file, under options, specify /ne -- essentially, you're typing
wp /ne at the command line. This disables WP from using extended memory.

Hope these helped.

Dan

I have the identical problem. At first I thought it was PC-NFS related as my
WP5.1 is on a network drive. Upon installing on my home system I discovered the
same problem, so I believe the network is not causing the trouble.

I observed 3 things: Problem less frequent if I close all windows and minimize
the program manager as I start WP5.1. Problem is less frequent if you set a pif
file with memory requirements of 0 and -1. Problem is very frequent if you
escape to a DOS shell and then start WP5.1.

Very Frequent = 99% of time. Frequent=90% of time Less frequent= 80% of time.

I'm very busy right now and haven't taken the chance to chase this any further.
I'm sure Bill Gates feels its a WP problem and I'm sure the WP people will say
"It will be fixed for a $150 upgrade to WP for windows."

This is in fact exactly what the WP people told me when I called them for
help with this problem. They have no intention of making the non-WIN version
of WP more "Windows-friendly". And I'm not a big enough fan of Windows to
buy a product which _requires_ it...

Ditto. :-(

Just as a general commentary, I have worked with WP51 both under Windows
and alone.

1.	WordPerfect runs much faster alone than under windows.
This is due partially to some Windows overhead, but
mostly to the fact that there is less memory available
	under Windows.

Use the /ws flag on the Wordperfect commmand line or

		set wp=/ws

at the DOS command line to get WP to tell you what
memory is available. This flag is not documented.

2.	WordPerfect can handle much bigger files alone. The swapping
seems to go up exponentially if you run out of space, and
so the time goes up exponentially.

3.	Don't use automatic backup -- it really can cause problems.
If you must use it, set it to 30 minutes rather than 5 min.

4.	Get the latest version of WP. The most recent program revisions
are 8/20/90. The most recent printer revisions are 12/20/90.

The new version of WordPerfect that is designed to run under Windows
will be out this year. You might try that.
