[comp.windows.ms] What are "System Resources"

ask@j.cc.purdue.edu (Scott Ksander) (01/09/91)

What are "Free System Resources" in the "about" box for the Program
Manager? I have a situation where I have 12 MB of real memory, an
8MB perm. swap file, and the "about" box shows 11.5MB of free
memory (8 MB swap + 3.5 MB real) and 3% Free System Resources.
Trying to bring up Excel gives an "out of memory" type message.
I assume this really means "out of System Resources". What are they
and how do I get more? (The above "in use" and "free" memory
numbers are also confirmed via HDC's Memory Viewer)

Any ideas??

One thing you can do to help this problem is to increase the
number of handles specified in the HIMEM.SYS line in your
CONFIG.SYS (I think the switch is /NUMHANDLES=xxx). I had the
same problem and discovered this by trial and error.

Also, some more knowledgeable person gave a detailed discussion
of what "system resources" are about a month ago (on this newsgroup,
I think).
