[comp.windows.ms] Floppy drive errors in 386Enh mode

jseidman@jarthur.Claremont.EDU (James Seidman) (01/08/91)

Has anyone experienced problems in reading floppy drives when in Windows?
I can read my 5 1/4' just fine, but trying to read from my 3 1/2' produces
a "System Error" from the File Manager, or a "Drive not ready" error from
a DOS session. Has anyone else had similar problems, and if so, what
caused them?

Thanks in advance!

I have this problem all the time. I have a machine with C&T chipset /
AMI BIOS, 80386 etc. What chipset / bios are you running ?

My machine has the Opti 80C381 chipset and a Quadtel BIOS. It's a 386DX-25.
I've also seen a similar problem on a Compaq 386/20, believe it or not!

I had a similar problem with my new 386. Turned out to be a bad BIOS
chip. No problems since it was replaced. (BTW, this was the only way
the flaw showed itself... all diagnostics ran fine.)
