[comp.windows.ms] bullets in WFW

spinrad@fig.ucsb.edu (Sanford Spinrad) (01/16/91)

I'm having problems with making bullets, both the round kind and the
square kind.

I've followed the instructions in the manual many times over and
always ended up with an italicized 'o' where the bullet should be on
the screen and get nothing when I print it out using an Apple
Laserwriter II.

From the instructions it appears that there are certain codes which
represent various symbols in the symbol font. It's my guess that the
code given in the reference manual for the bullet is incorrect. Is
there someplace where I can look to see all the codes for the various
symbols and then use the correct one or am I going about prodcuing
bullets in the wrong way?

Thanks for you help,

Sandy

Here's what we have done to find out what the various special codes are
for our printers. We have a NEC LC890 for Postscript.

We created a document that contains all codes from 33 to 255. One column
has the actual coded character, and the other column shows what the 3
digit code is. Print it out and you have a handy reference. The coded
characters can use any font (Symbol, Dingbats, etc.), while the reference
column is courier. A bit tedious, but you only have to do it once.

The printed output will look something like this:

		065	A
		066	B
		 ^	^
		 |	+-- special char, typed with ALT
		 +--------- reference, typed without ALT

This example is what you might see with Times Roman. My Times Roman bullets
are 249 and 250.

I haven't found any way to determine what ALT keycode you've used for a
character once it's typed. Also, of course, the screen display will often
be different from the printed output. WYSINWYG :-).

First I would like to thank eveyone who responded to my request for
how to get bullets for WFW. I finally got a bullet by using ALT-249
instead of ALT-0249 as the reference manual says. But inorder to see
what other special characters I have avilable, I think that I will have
to type them all in manually.

Or perhaps maybe someone has already entered ALT-001 through ALT-255.
And maybe this pesrson can upload this file to someplace easily
accessible (i.e. cica) or perhaps uuencode it and post it here. It
would sure save me some typing.

Thanks again for your help,

Sandy
